Visible-light-cured dental restorative materials, commonly called "composites" are hardened only by light at the blue end of the visible spectrum. The wavelength range for activation is 400 to 520 nanometers which includes the blue spectrum and a portion of the violet. Light outside this range, including the ultraviolet, shorter than 400 nanometers, and green, yellow, and red, longer than 520 nanometers, does not cure composites. Many curing lights used in dentistry emit light outside the curing range which contributes only to heat or glare generated at the curing site. The Demetron Radiometer is designed to measure only useful curing light energy and to be insensitive to energy outside the useful range.
